Fashion Designer Titania Inglis Wins Ecco Domani Sustainable Design Grant

Fashion designer Titania Inglis has been awarded the 2012 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award for Sustainable Design, according to Ecouterre.

The award, which comes with a $25,000 grant, was created in 2008 and previously bestowed upon Tara St. James of Study NY, John Patrick of Organic, and Bodkin’s Eviana Hartman.

Sustainable Design is one of seven award areas given by the Italian wine maker Ecco Domani to emerging designers to help them stage a runway show during New York Fashion Week.

Designers are evaluated on their consideration of the three elements of sustainability: Environment, social equity, and economic viability. Applicants must demonstrate high performance in at least one area such as the use of environmentally friendly materials or production methods that promote fair trade or social equity for workers, Ecco Domani says on its foundation website.

Inglis debuted her line in 2010, and according to her website she chooses the materials for her collections with “thought to their environmental impact as well as their quality.” Materials include organic cottons from Japan, vegetable-tanned leather, and dead stock fabrics from the local garment industry in New York.

Her spring/summer collection for 2011 was called “Almost Zero” a reference to the waste reduction efforts that went into the design and manufacturing of the pieces.
