Julie Herbstman

Associate Professor, Environmental Health Sciences

Dr. Herbstman is an environmental and molecular epidemiologist whose research area focuses on the effects of prenatal exposures to environmental pollutants on child health outcomes and the molecular mechanisms underlying these associations.

She is the Director of the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health (CCCEH) and has been an investigator there for the past 12 years. Dr. Herbstman has expertise in the design, conduct and analysis of epidemiologic studies that include biomarker data. She directs multiple longitudinal birth cohort studies of children born in New York City, including a number of NIH-funded research projects examining early life exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), pyrethroid pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), phenols (including BPA) and phthalates and their impact on child health and neurodevelopment.
